Preparing for a book launch party

by | Apr 24, 2017

There is much excitement in my household at the moment as we prepare for this weekend’s book launch.

Harnessing my creative side, and that of my children (the girls in particular), we’ve been busy creating props and displays for the party.

Called ‘The Mystery of the Disappearing Underpants’, you might already have guessed that the story involves mention of a certain type of under clothing. My ten year old, therefore, created some appropriately-themed bunting for the occasion, strung together by a washing line  – a clue to an element of the story!

To create a backdrop as a feature for the copies of the book, we put together our own version of the lookout den used by the three wannabe spies in the story. This one is made of carboard (obviously), given the wood-effect look by some clever additions (thanks YouTube). We have collected some spy and joke gadgets to decorate around the room too – clue to an element of the story (number 2!).

Not to be outdone on the creative side, big sister stepped in next to add her own mark to the proceedings. She cleared our extremely overcrowded fridge freezer and turned it into a display for all things relevant to the book. It looks amazing and would rival a full-length printed display board any day.

Having the book launch party at home is a reflection of who I am as a person, as much as it is about practical reasons.

There will be cupcakes made using Free From Fairy flour – all gluten and dairy free – with an element of surprise I can’t reveal at this moment in time (watch this space for an update after the event). There will also be donuts made by Borough 22. Both these companies are run by people I admire hugely, as well as being a big fan of their products.

It feels right to be surrounded by creativity in all forms at the launch of what is to be my own creative adventure.

The Mystery of the Disappearing Underpants is out this Friday. I can hardly believe the day has almost arrived and I’m looking forward to celebrating this day with the support of my friends and family.
