Friday Fiction – Jokes for Dads

Welcome to Friday Fiction. Regular visitors will know that I share a fictional piece here every week and invite others to link up their own work. The blue frog below takes you to the link-up page, where you can either add your own blog pieces or read others.

My fiction piece this week is based on the 7x7x7x7 writing exercise I wrote about last week. The idea is, you take the seventh book from your book shelf, turn to the seventh page and find the seventh line. You then write a poem of, you guessed it, seven lines using this sentence.

Here is what I came up with this week (brace yourselves):

Dads like jokes about football
Elephants and wooden legs.
Englishman, Irishmen, Scotsmen
Boobs, bums and fart noises time and again.
Try and you’ll see
Just talk about wee
And watch dads start acting as though they are small.

I have my husband and son to thank for inspiring such creative and rich vocabulary in this poem! Ok, so it won’t be winning any prizes any time soon, but what was I supposed to do, the seventh book was the ‘Ha Ha Bonk’ joke book by Janet and Alan Ahlberg and the seventh page was entitled ‘Jokes for Dads’?

This went down a treat with the kids and I have a feeling it might make a reappearance later in the year in a Father’s Day card (even though it’s not exactly flattering). Both my girls liked the sound of this exercise and decided to have a go at doing one themselves. This is what they came up with:

‘Ice cream, ice cream, ice cream,’ said Pixie.
Strawberry, chocolate and mint.
Delicious, marvellous, wonderful,
I’ve eaten so much, now I’m full.
What’s my favourite food?
I’ll give you a hint,
Ice cream, ice cream, ice cream.

They sat side by side in the moonlight,
Talking a quarrelling a little.
Two witches cats,
Both black as bats,
But different as day and night.
One preferred magic, cauldrons and riding on her mistresses broom,
The other dreamed of a family and a place by the fire in a warm cosy room.

You never know where these writing exercises will take you. I hope you enjoyed them and perhaps they inspired you to have a go at one yourself.

Here is the link to add your own work. I look forward to reading them. Don’t forget to grab the button and tell others about it too.

I loved this exercise – being restricted helped me write something I wouldn’t normally have done. The same applies to you as well I think – tee hee! Love the way your daughters have written their own poems too – very impressive. I might see if my boys fancy trying it, my eldest (7) loves writing and my five year old wants to do anything his big brother does! Thanks for the inspiration! xx

These are all great! Love your jokes one, and your daughters ones are brilliant πŸ™‚ I am definitely going to have to have a go at this one, although all my books are still in boxes in the garage… Might make for an interesting first line in whatever books I can actually find! Thank you so much for sharing with #ThePrompt x
