Every Piece of Writing has its Own Place

I love writing this blog and I use it to discuss the things that are important to me. I also write articles that are more business related and at one point I tried to add these to this blog too. I soon realised that they don’t really have a home here. My copywriting work is part of my writing life, but my blog followers aren’t necessarily interested in those sorts of articles.

What I do now is write articles on a Business blog. These articles are relevant to the people who read and share them. I have links on my website to both my personal blog (this one) and my business one, so that visitors can choose which one they would prefer to read.

I already feel that this blog has enough hats. I concentrate mainly on fiction, health and family travel and that, really, is enough. Writing business-style articles is an important part of my work, so I need to do these too, but they needed a different home. This month I wrote about re-marketing products. It’s a nostalgia-seeking look at some old products that are back on our shelves and how they have either been given a fresh-take or adapted for a more modern audience. If you were around the first time high-rise jeans and Dr Martins were in fashion, then I’m sure you will identify with this piece.

I can read the whole article – and identify with it! I must seek out the fish ‘n’ chips snack! Your blog does indeed have a lot of hats – I find it tricky to even fit the parenting side of my blog in these days so it’s almost entirely for writing now. Sounds like a good idea to at least limit it to only a few types of post rather than bringing work stuff in too. Thanks for linking to #WhatImWriting xx

It’s tricky managing all the pieces of a writing jigsaw isn’t it. I happen to enjoy pretty much most writing projects as long as I’m able to put my own stamp on them somehow. But yes, keeping work and personal projects separate makes a lot of sense.

Really interesting to read something you’ve written with a different ‘hat’ on! I sometimes wonder whether my blog fits around too much. It definitely doesn’t fit into a nice easily definable mould, but I figure whilst I’m not looking to be PR-friendly then that’s ok! Your business articles are quite a leap away from some of your other stuff though, so I agree that it’s right for them to have their own home 🙂 x

I sometimes feel that my blog has too many hats, and I’m going to take a bit of time out over Christmas to try and redefine it a little, decide which are the most important hats for me. Having said that, I enjoy writing everything that I do write! Loved your comments on ‘normal’ jeans 🙂 #whatimwriting

That’s the difficulty, do you have a niche or keep writing what you love? I think I have scaled mine down and I’m also of the opinion that it is nice to have some variety, otherwise I might run out of things to write about!

It’s nice to read something you’ve written under another guise! And I didn’t realise Wispa bars were withdrawn! I do remember them being launched though (old). And I do love my Liberty Doc Martens too. I know what you mean about including too much within your blog – you have to think about its readership. But at the same time, trying to maintain several blogs is tricky too.

Yes, I’m sure Wispa bars came back smaller though. You have Liberty DM’s? I bet they are lovely. I just got my daughter her first pair. She is 10. Funny how these things come around.

I love Wispa bars. I have a Wispa Gold on the desk as I type, actually. Since my clothes were all bought in the early 2000’s when I had money, I still wear my hipsters and corduroy flares. The nostalgia!

I can relate to this and the feeling you have to move some things to a new home. It’s a hard decision to make but you have to remember that it’s your blog and that means you get to choose what goes on here. Yes, there are stats and judgements and klout scores etc etc ad nauseum (I don’t like stats. Played that game, wasn’t good at it.) however they shouldn’t dictate the content of your blog.

I suppose it all depends on the end game. Do you want to have somewhere to dump thoughts and feelings, or do you want to go more commercial? Is there a middle-ground somewhere? We’re all forced to answer these questions about our blogs at some point and it’s a crossroads for a lot of people.

You’ve hit a nice balance with this blog.

Thanks. I do feel happy with my blog as it stands. I only join in with your link and then there is my own. That covers the fiction work. Then i also cover health and food because my background is nutrition and it is relevant to me andy family. I dont want to manage more than one blog, that would be too much. The explore b2b does a lot of promoting of its own, so what you write on there has a wider reach than what i could achieve on my own.
