A gluten and dairy free birthday party

Typical party food usually includes sandwiches, sausages, sausage rolls, chocolate biscuits and of course, cake.

When my five year old dairy and wheat intolerant son goes to a party I have to send him with his own packed lunch. I am not criticising anybody. This is the sort of food that children love. But unfortunately party food is generally a complete no-no for an intolerant person.

This weekend my son had his own party. And this time, of course, nothing was off the menu for him.

Gluten free honey and mustard glazed sausages
Chicken nuggets made with an almond, sunflower and pumpkin seed crumb
Cucumber, carrot stick and cherry tomatoes
Humous
Crisps
and fruity kebabs…

My daughter and I made a huge plateful of these thinking that there would be plenty left for us to have later. No such luck, though. They were all gobbled up. And not forgetting the all important cakes…

Cupcakes with a ‘cream cheese’ frosting.

The birthday cake was a coconut sponge filled with jam and coconut cream. I was too busy to get a photo of it, but I can assure you it was tasty and I shall be making it again.

My son definitely had his fill of cakes and treats today and the weather held off, so all 14 of them got to play out in the garden and have a water fight as planned. It was a huge success all round.

That all looks delicious! I have several on the wheat and dairy free diet, myself included. The coconut sponge cake sounds delicious. Would you mind sharing the recipe? Happy birthday to your little guy!

I do love the sound of the sausage and chicken nuggets – I bet they were delicious. I’m not at all surprised that all the fruit kebabs went as they looked very tasty. I hope he had a wonderful birthday and I would have loved to have seen a photo of the birthday boy enjoying the water fight. Thanks for linking up and sharing with Country Kids.

Thanks. I did get a couple of them playing but I don’t tend to put up photos if they include other peoples children in them. Besides, I was also standing way back so I didn’t get wet!

Thanks! We were like zombies by the end of the day. His birthday is Christmas Day, so this was an experimental half year party. Think it might be the way to go from now on though.

I’m happy to report that it is possible to make delicious dairy and wheat free cakes! I’m still experimenting with different recipes but enjoying the task!

Yum!! I am gluten intolerant and hope to add such ideas onto my blog! Maybe I can link to some of your posts, giving all kudos to you of course! 🙂

Yes that would be fun to do. I am still experimenting at the moment, but I am determined to prove you can still have yummy treats that are both dairy and wheat free. Often when we go out we might find gluten free cakes etc, but they aren’t dairy free. It frustrates me.

Here near Seattle we have a grocery store chain called wholefoods…it has a few brands of products that are Vegan &Gluten free both! (A vegan product would solve the no-dairy issue) In fact I just had a Pecan Cinnamon roll that was really good! The company is Flying Apron:)

Ok so now you’re just showing off! Only joking, I agree that you can find both dairy ad gluten free products in the shops, but I don’t like most of them because they have tonnes of sugar and a host of ingredients that don’t seem to relate to the product (the ones I’ve come across anyway). But sometimes we take the kids out and go for a coffee and a cake and it’s then that my son can never have anything. I always take something for him, but still, it would be nice if he had a choice none and then. I would love to open a Babycakes kind of shop in my town.

Ha! I didn’t realize I posted twice, I thought the first one didn’t send for some reason. It does look rather show offish 😉 Yu just must be smarter than I m. I looked for Dairy and gluten free products and never thought to just buy vegan gluten free! I think you could open a specialty cake shop I bet it would be very popular 🙂

Hey! Lovely to ‘meet you’ through #sharewithme. I will be doing the same thing over the next month. My son (who has no allergies) has his birthday in a couple of weeks and then it is my daughter’s. I always make the food all edible for her (gluten and dairy free) so that she has two parties a year that she can completely enjoy!! I can’t wait to see their smiley faces!

    • Nicola Young says

I know what you mean. Everything we eat in our house is edible for my son, even though the rest of us don’t need to avoid anything. It’s just easier to do things that way and it seems unfair that they should miss out at home as well as everywhere else. Will you be posting abut your party and linking up?

Ahhh Happy Birthday and what an amazing party to enjoy and have fun eating all that delicious free from foods too! Amazing. Thank you so much for linking to Share With Me #sharewithme

My toddler is milk intolerant and so far every party/outing we have gone to I have also taken him his own food. He turns to me whenever someone tries to give him food. I hope that one day he will grow out of his intolerance.
Love the food you had on offer!
