Taking On My Own Camp NaNoWriMo Challenge

by | Jul 8, 2013

I’ve been so busy lately with work and school that I haven’t had much time to do any of my own writing. At the risk of sounding sorry for myself (which I’m not), when you have three children who are all involved in different things both in and out of school, housework, plus a job, there are some things that just get put to the very bottom of your list of priorities and there they remain.

I started writing a story for 8-12 year olds about a year ago and have re-visited it a number of times since, promising myself that one day I would getting around to working on it. So, when I heard that this month was going to be another National Novel Writing Month or Camp NaNoWriMo as it is known, I decided to dig out this story and use camp NaNoWriMo as my inspriation to crack on and get it finished.

I am only aiming to write around 15,000 words (as I have already written the first 5,000), not the 50,000 that you are challenged with for NaNoWriMo. But sticking to the principle and achieving the word count I have set myself during this month is my main aim. This equates to 3,750 words per week, which might not seem like much to some people but to me it is just about achievable as I might not get around to writing every day.

So far I am on target and I have even managed to get my quota done for today. I know that what I am doing is basically throwing words on to a page and that there will be a massive amount of editing to do at the end of this month. But what I do like is that it really focuses you to get something finished. Having a completed manuscript in front of you to work on is better than sitting in front of an empty screen procrastinating over what to write.

Go on, give it a go. You never know what you may achieve.

    Hi Nikki,
I enjoyed your blog about self-motivating, and I also remember the days with kids, husband and house and and and. Glad you are making time for you.
Since this is camp, you can set any goal you want, I’m pattihall there. We have a pretty quiet cabin , but there is room for more.
    Take care,
    Patti
